Further discussions regarding the USD 253 facility needs assessment highlighted the Emporia School Board meeting Wednesday night.
HTK Architects returned to the board after presenting the full findings of their recent assessment at the board’s meeting two weeks ago. Wednesday’s presentation focused on updating the board on options available to them in terms of facility renovations.
There were several recurring themes at each of the facilities in terms of needs found by HTK during their assessment. This includes desires for more secure entries, appropriately sized and located front offices, additional classrooms and improved pick up and drop off areas.
USD 253 Superintendent Kevin Case says he has continuously been impressed with both the quality and quantity of information HTK has presented.
While topics such as entrance security and storm shelters continued to be main topics of discussion, board President Mike Crouch expressed a desire to see more dedicated space for arts programs. He says art programs such as those at Emporia High School with national recognition, need adequate space to continue flourishing.
While the main purpose of the presentation was to present the board with potential options, it also allowed board members an opportunity to provide feedback to HTK as they work to refine their concepts. HTK representative Zach Snethen feels the meeting was just as informative for him as it was the board.
According to representatives in attendance, if the district decided to to do all improvements at one time, the total design and construction process could take upwards of three years. The next step in the process will be for HTK to continue refining their presentations before returning to the board for further discussions in March.
In other business board members unanimously approved the annual list of administrator contracts. Board members also approved a $300,000 contingency to be used for salaries and approved the purchase of a new engine for one district school bus in the total amount of $26,784.95.
The board also took time to recognize Emporia High School junior Reed Slayden for winning a state championship at the recent class 5-1A boys’ state diving competition.
Two executive sessions also took place. The USD 253 Board of Education will next meet Wednesday, March 13 at 7 pm inside the Mary Herbert Education Center.
