Kansas Gas Service has been told return almost $18 million in tax savings to customers.
The Kansas Corporation Commission issued the order Monday, telling Kansas Gas to give residential customers a one-time bill credit of $22.78.
Kansas Gas received $17.9 million in savings after the Federal Tax Cuts and Jobs Act reduced the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 21 percent in January 2018. After that decision, the KCC told utilities to track their savings and keep those is a separate interest-bearing account.
This past June, Kansas Gas asked KCC to keep the tax savings to offset service costs. KCC said that was not in the public interest.
