The Olpe girls and boys claimed Regional Championships, Saturday, as the girls beat Waverly 58-34 and the boys topped Madison 54-34.
The Olpe girls jumped out to a 22-11 first quarter lead, and pushed it to 18 by halftime, on their way to the 58-34 win. Olpe’s defense forced Waverly into 17 turnovers and kept the Lady Bulldogs off-balance most of the night. The Lady Eagles had the lead to as many as 22 early in the second quarter, but could never completely pull away. Olpe coach Jesse Nelson says they played well, but could have played much better.
Olpe was led by Emma Miller with 22 points. Neleh (knee-lee) Davis added 13. Waverly was led by Sara McWilliams with 10 points. The Olpe girls improve to 21-0, while Waverly falls to 18-3.
The Olpe boys jumped out to a seven-point first quarter lead, and steadily stretched it throughout the game, on their way to the 54-34 victory. Olpe’s defense never let Madison get comfortable, holding the Bulldogs to 34 percent shooting and forcing 16 turnovers. Olpe coach Chris Schmidt liked the way his team built on the semifinal win.
Cam Hoelting led Olpe with 24 points. Dawson McCarthy was also in double figures with 10 points. Madison was led by Kelton Buettner’s 10. Olpe improves to15-7, while Madison falls to 12-11. The Olpe girls and boys, Waverly girls, and Madison boys will all play in Sub-State next week.
The Chase County Girls otu scored Berean Academy 52-50 to win the Moundridge Regional Championship game.
At the Lebo Regional:
Lebo out scored Burlingame 50-43 to win the boys championship game.
In the girls Championship game Rural Vista defeated Burlingame 62-33.
