Lawsuits have been filed against Hill’s Pet Nutrition after the pet food maker recalled almost 14 million cans of food last month.
Several class-action lawsuits, or lawsuits filed on behalf of a group of people, are now filed against the company with more expected. Those lawsuits say, among other things, that Hill’s delayed warnings to both consumers and regulatory agencies — something the company denies.
Hill’s issued the recall after finding possibly high levels of vitamin D in certain Specialty Dog Food offerings. Reports of dog health issues started developing in December, according to CBS News.
Hills says an unspecified supplier error was at fault for the vitamin overload. Further details on that front have not been released.
Vitamin D is considered an essential nutrient for dogs, much as it is for humans. However, elevated levels can lead to potential health hazards, including vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling and weight loss. Very high levels of vitamin D can lead to renal dysfunction, although Hill’s says complete recovery is expected in most cases after animals stop eating the affected product.
