A lot of well-known Republicans in Kansas are debating whether to launch a bid for the US Senate seat opening up with Pat Roberts’ retirement announced a few weeks ago. One such Republican is now saying he’s off that list.
Mike Pompeo, the current US Secretary of State and one-time US Congressman serving south-central and southeast Kansas, told the Today Show he’s not considering a run for that office during an interview this week.
Pompeo served Kansas’ 4th Congressional District from 2011 to 2017. Before leading the State Department, he also served briefly as President Donald Trump’s CIA director.
Several prominent Republicans have either said they are considering a run or are looked upon by statewide political experts as potential candidates, including former Governor Jeff Colyer, former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, current US Congressman Roger Marshall, current Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt and current Kansas Senate President Susan Wagle. Current State Treasurer Jake LaTurner has already started his campaign for the office.
On the Democrat side, former US Attorney for Kansas Barry Grissom is considering a run.
