Kansas AAA has announced their 2019 Traffic Safety Awards and once again the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is at the top of the list.
Earlier this week AAA Kansas announced 41 law enforcement agencies — comprising 30 police departments and 11 sheriff’s offices — throughout the state are being honored with the awards for their 2018 work to keep roadways in their cities and counties safe through a variety of initiatives and programs.
The highest level of the award is the platinum award, which the Sheriff’s Office has received repeatedly over the past 6 to 7 years. Lyon County Sheriff Jeff Cope says the department takes great pride in the award.
Efforts conducted by the Sheriff’s Office include their upcoming Seatbelts are for Everyone Campaign which begins next week. The campaign seeks to educate on the importance of seatbelt safety in area high schools.
Sheriff Cope explains the campaign is made up of several phases.
Next week’s phase is the enforcement component which Sheriff Cope explains will see a larger law enforcement presence searching for drivers not wearing their seatbelts. He says anyone found not wearing their seatbelt can expect to be pulled over and receive a citation with no ifs ands or buts about it.
