The Lyon County Commission had a light agenda before them during their weekly action session Thursday morning.
County Engineer Chip Woods was in attendance seeking approval of a resolution to alter the weight limits of 10 county bridges and remove the weight limit of 18. The altering of the weight limits is needed to be in line with federal law.
Failure to comply with the changes could result in a loss of funding for any Road and Bridge projects which qualify for Federal funds. It could also see the county lose federal funding as a whole.
Woods stresses the changes are not due to any issues with the bridges themselves and are simply the result of a change in the government’s formula used to set the weight limits on the bridges.
Woods also requested approval to send off requests for sign making materials, the majority of which will be used to make the new weight limit signs for the county bridges. Once the new signs are established a photo will need to be sent to the Kansas Department of Transportation proving the signs have been put up.
All items were approved 3-0.
In other business, Bruce Boettcher of BG Consultants and County Facilities Manager Mark McKenna were in attendance seeking approval of agreements for an improvement project at the Lyon County Jail. The project is to design and replace the jail’s hot water heating system and chiller.
The agreements presented were for engineering fees for BG Consultants regarding the design process, bid letting and overseeing the project in its entirety. The estimated total cost of the project is just over $190,000.
The agreements were approved 3-0.
Six executive sessions also took place. The Lyon County Commission will next meet Thursday, Feb. 28 at 8 am inside the Lyon County Courthouse.
