It was a rough night for the Emporia High basketball teams Tuesday night at Washburn Rural.
The Lady Spartans were out scored 50-22 by the number 3 ranked team in 6A. After trailing only 18-12 after the first quarter the Emporia High girls were out scored 12-3 in the 2nd quarter and Rural used a 10-0 run to start the 3rd quarter to put the game out of reach for Coach Carolyn Dorseys team.
The Lady Spartans were led in scoring by Mya Tovar with 11 points. The Emporia High girls are now 6-9 for the season and 3-6 in the Centennial League.
The Emporia High boys were out scored by Rural the number 2 ranked team in 6A 65-53. The Spartans trailed 13-12 after the first quarter but would trail by as many as 11 in the 2nd quarter. They cut the defecit to 6 in the 2nd half but Coach Beau Welches team could get no closer.
Emporia High did play without Sophomore Charles Snyder, the teams leading scorer, who is out with a hand injury and may miss the rest of the season. Spencer Stewart led Emporia High in scoring with 15 points. Hayden Pauls added 10 points. The Spartans fall to 9-6 for the season and 4-5 in the Centennial League.
The Emporia High basketball teams are scheduled to host Topeka West Friday night.
