A Coffey County woman suffered apparently minor injuries as part of a multi-vehicle pileup that killed a Lawrence man in Leavenworth County on Sunday.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash happened on Interstate 70 around 4:15 pm and involved five westbound vehicles — a van, minivan, car, pickup and bus. Three of the five vehicles later involved were slowing down or stopping due to traffic ahead when the van, driven by 62-year-old Michael Weis of Columbia, Montana, rear-ended a car driven by 21-year-old Tristan Kuritz of Lawrence. The car then hit the minivan, which was pushed into the bus.
The driver of the fifth vehicle involved changed lanes to avoid the crash but still hit the minivan and a nearby barrier.
Kuritz was killed in the crash. A passenger suffered suspected minor injuries and was taken to Overland Park Regional for treatment.
Four people were on the bus, including 76-year-old Polly Epting of Burlington. She suffered suspected minor injuries along with two other riders, but the Highway Patrol crash log does not list whether any were taken to a hospital for treatment.
The minivan driver was taken to KU Medical Center with suspected serious injuries. The pickup driver was listed with suspected minor injuries, and the crash log does not say whether she was hospitalized.
