Hill’s Pet Nutrition is recalling several of its canned pet food offerings.
The company announced it was voluntarily recalling certain canned dog food products because of possibly high levels of vitamin D, an essential nutrition for dogs — although elevated levels can lead to potential health hazards, including vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling and weight loss. Very high levels of vitamin D can lead to renal dysfunction, although Hill’s says complete recovery is expected in most cases after animals stop eating the affected product.
Hill’s has a pet food plant in Emporia. It says an unspecified supplier error is at fault. No dry food, cat foods or pet treats are affected.
Pet owners who bought any of the affected food should stop feeding it to their dogs. They should also throw out any opened cans or bring unopened product back to retailers for refunds. For more information, call 800-445-5777 or email contactus@hillspet.com.
