An unspecified mechanical issue apparently led to a vehicle fire near Emporia on Wednesday night.
Lyon County Deputy Brandon Early says 26-year-old Robert Watson of Emporia was driving in the 1700 block of Road R-1 when he heard a loud noise from the engine compartment and also saw a “check engine” light appear on the dashboard shortly after 10 pm. Watson pulled over and saw fire in the engine compartment.
Emporia and Hartford-Neosho Rapids fire crews were dispatched to the scene and got the fire out. Watson was not hurt.

No injuries were reported after an undetermined issue led to a single vehicle fire on Interstate 35 Wednesday evening.
Emporia Fire Crews responded to a call for a vehicle fire just after 10 pm Wednesday evening at the mile marker 135 northbound exit on I-35. According to the Emporia Fire Department, once crews arrived on scene they discovered the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. Crews had the fire out shortly after arriving.
While the cause of the fire is undetermined the Emporia Fire Department says the fire originated in the engine compartment. The owner of the vehicle got out before it went up in flames and was the one who made the call to 9-1-1.
The Emporia Fire Department was assisted by District 5 Hartford-Neosho Rapids and the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.

Emporia Fire and Lyon County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call for a vehicle fire on the mile marker 35 northbound exit ramp on I-35 shortly after 10 pm Wednesday evening. According to a deputy on scene, there was a single vehicle fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived.
