In about a month, administrators and board members for the National Teachers Hall of Fame should know the names of the 2019 induction class.
The rest of us? We get to know starting in mid-March.
On KVOE’s Talk of Emporia this week, Director Carol Strickland said there was a robust list of applicants.
The selection committee meets Feb. 21 with surprise announcements at each of the inductees’ school buildings in March. Induction week starts June 17 in Emporia, and there is one major schedule change versus past years. The rededication of the National Memorial to Fallen Educators will take place on the same day as the formal inductions.
Fundraising continues to add a granite stone for the memorial, which was needed after last year’s rededication ceremonies. With the number of teachers and support staffers killed in the line of duty last year, the current tablets ran out of space. The Hall of Fame is about $10,000 away from closing out fundraising and adding another book to the site.
Earlier this week, the Teachers Hall of Fame was announced as one of 24 beneficiaries of this year’s fundraising work done by the St. Patrick’s Committee. Board treasurer Angie Schreiber says the goal is to get students to think more about education and to learn more about the memorial.
