The partial federal government shutdown is over, at least for now.
On Friday, President Donald Trump signed a stopgap measure to reopen the departments and agencies shut down since just before Christmas for three weeks. The deal will get hundreds of thousands of government workers current and back pay because they were working unpaid during the 36-day shutdown.
The deal does not, however, set aside any money for Trump’s demand for a wall along the US-Mexico border.
Kansas lawmakers say they are grateful the government has reopened in a series of Tweets. Senator Pat Roberts says, “I am glad President Trump signed legislation to reopen the government. We must come to an agreement to secure our border during the next three weeks.”
Senator Jerry Moran says that while “short-term funding bills are never a good way to govern, it is critical that we reopen the government and pay our federal workers.”
Congressman Roger Marshall says, “I will continue to stand with President Trump and his efforts to secure our southern border. I am glad that federal workers will receive their paychecks.”
All three Republican lawmakers called on Democrats to negotiate as part of their online statements.
This deal lasts until Feb. 15. Trump says he may sign an executive order to fund the border wall if a longer-term budget deal is not struck.
