Wintry weather is in the forecast possibly through the overnight hours Wednesday.
The National Weather Service has extended several winter weather advisories and announced one additional for the KVOE listening area. The current list is as follows:
*Greenwood County: now in effect until 3 am Wednesday
*Lyon, Osage, Wabaunsee counties: Until 6 am Wednesday
*Chase County: Until 3 am Wednesday
*Coffey County: Until 6 am Wednesday
*Morris County: Until 6 am Wednesday
A wintry mix began affecting travel conditions earlier this afternoon. TV-13 Meteorologist Jeremy Goodwin tells residents they can expect to see that continue into the evening.
Rain this morning changed over to a wintry mix as a cold front pushes across the state which will has dropped temperatures from the mid-40s to the upper 20’s. Temperatures will continue to slide to the mid- and upper teens overnight, with a wintry mix or light snow continuing until close to sunrise.
Road conditions in the KVOE listening area began to take a turn for the worse around 4 pm Tuesday. So far only on accident has been reported.
A semi traveling northbound on I35 at mile marker 110 jack knifed near the cattle pens. All lanes were blocked but currently traffic is moving slowly through the area.
Motorists are asked to excercise caution in the area.
City Street Supervisor Mike Dvorak says City Crews have begun treating roadways starting with overpasses around 3:40 pm Tuesday afternoon.
According to Assistant Lyon County Engineer Jim Brull, roads crews went out arouns 2:30 Tuesday afternoon as they received calls of slick spots on Allen Road. He says the current plan is to treat roads with salt and sand, however, that may change as temperatures begin to drop into the upper teens Tuesday evening.

*USD 253 Emporia all after-school activities canceled, including Emporia High boys swim/dive meet at Topeka High, Emporia High wrestling dual against Basehor-Linwood and Chanute, and Emporia Middle School 7th- and 8th-grade basketball games.. RecXtra will be held as scheduled.
*USD 251 North Lyon County dismissed 3 hours early. Northern Heights dismissed at 12:30 pm. North Lyon County Elementary dismissed at 1 pm. Northern Heights basketball vs. Rural Vista postponed to Feb. 7. Decision about practice to be determined.
*USD 252 Southern Lyon County dismissing at 2 pm.
*USD 243 Lebo-Waverly dismissing at 2:30 pm.
*USD 244 Burlington dismissing at 2:30 pm for bus riders and 2:45 pm for walkers. All after-school activities and practices canceled.
*USD 417 Morris County dismissed at 12:45 pm. Council Grove basketball at Wamego postponed to Jan. 28.
*USD 420 Osage City after-school activities and practices canceled. Osage City basketball vs. Royal Valley canceled.
*USD 421 Lyndon after-school activities canceled.
*USD 434 Santa Fe Trail after-school activities and practices canceled.
*USD 456 Marais des Cygnes Valley after-school activities and practices canceled.
Athletics
*Lyon County League basketball tournament postponed to Wednesday.
Government
*Lyon County Sheriff’s Office closed at 1:30 pm. Non-essential staff released for the day. Registered offender information time period from 3-5 pm canceled.

Tuesday 3 pm: UPDATE: Slippery conditions possible areawide through early Wednesday
Slick driving conditions are possible across the KVOE listening area until early Wednesday morning.
Rain this morning will change over to a wintry mix and/or snow as a cold front pushes across the state and drops temperatures from the mid-40s to the low 30s by the evening drive home. Temperatures will slide to the mid- and upper teens overnight, with a wintry mix or light snow continuing through midnight.

5:45 am Tuesday: Winter weather advisories expanded, now cover Lyon and most surrounding counties
Winter weather advisories cover most of the KVOE listening area with a chance of a wintry mix through much of the day.
Total snow and ice accumulations could be around an inch. Most of that will be snow, but there could be a thin glaze of ice underneath. TV-13 meteorologist Doug Meyers cautions there could be widespread travel issues.
Several winter weather advisories reflect the prospect for travel hazards through the day:
*Lyon, Coffey and Osage counties are in an advisory from 5 pm to midnight
*Chase County is in an advisory from 9 am to 9 pm
*Morris County is in an advisory from 9 am to midnight
*Wabaunsee County is in an advisory from 2 pm to midnight
Greenwood County is currently not under any weather alert.
Temperatures will fall from the mid-40s this morning to the low 30s by late afternoon and continue down to the upper teens overnight. Winds will also be a factor as they gust as high as 30 mph.
