The Hornet’s Nest located inside the Memorial Student Union on the campus of Emporia State University has received an inspirational redecoration.
The redesign is a collaboration between Studio E, ESU’s student advertising collaborative made up of ESU students and the Memorial Union. The new look includes the faces of inspirational figures such as Martin Luther King Jr, Ceasar Chavez, Malala Yousafzai, William Allen White and many others adorning the walls of the cafeteria.
Studio E worked with Shawn Honea of IM Design Group to install the custom vinyl decals on the walls of the Hornet’s Nest.
Along with the notable faces are also some of the notable quotes those individuals shared with others. According to Memorial Union Director Carmen Leeds, they are attempting to reach all different areas of diversity including abilities, cultures and nationalities.
Leeds says the new look is meant to promote diversity and inclusion. She says it also is a great educational opportunity for the student body.
The project has been in the works for over the past year as discussions began back in the spring semester of 2018. Along with the notable public figures, the project also incorporates notable regional figures and ESU alumni who helped to make an impact locally or at the university.
Leeds says she hopes this inclusion helps to spark a passion in their students.
The new decorations went up at 11 am Monday morning and Leeds says they plan to switch out the regional and ESU individuals on a semesterly basis, however, the larger decals will remain up for as long as possible.
