Burn season is fast approaching, and Lyon County Emergency Management Director Jarrod Fell encourages residents to pick up free burn permits if they have not already taken that step.
Fell joined KVOE’s Newsmaker segment recently to encourage residents to get ready for the upcoming burn season. Fell says the permits help authorities track which fires may need a response.
Fell says the permit process has done its job. Fire departments have not sent as many units out to calls where they were not needed, and the permits also pinpoint when resources are getting low.
Lyon County has been issuing burn permits on a two-year cycle for several years now. This is the second year of the current cycle, so all residents interested in conducting controlled burns will have to get new burn permits next year.
Burn permits are again free of charge. They are available at the Sheriff’s Office at 425 Mechanic, Lyon County Courthouse at 420 Commercial, city clerk offices across the county and through Lyon County deputies.
Fell also reminds residents that burn permits will not apply whenever there is a red flag warning. Those alerts are issued for a combination of dry grasses, low humidity levels and windy conditions, and Lyon County policy is now to have burn bans whenever red flag warnings are in effect.
