Emporia’s Martin Luther King, Jr., Celebration is taking place in two locations Monday.
Emporia State University will hold a candlelight vigil starting at 3 pm at Union Square. Students can write reflection articles beforehand which will be read during the event.
In addition, First Friends Church will have a community celebration starting at 6:30 pm. Doors open at 6 pm at the church, 615 East Sixth Avenue.
ESU has additional activities planned for the week ahead, including a “Black Out March” at Union Square at noon Tuesday, a movie night featuring “The Butler” at 7 pm Wednesday at the Memorial Union PKP Room, and the 2019 King Lecture on Thursday evening. Dr. Michael Jones will talk about “The Man, The Myth, The Legend, Formerly Known as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” That talk at 6:30 pm at the Memorial Union Skyline Room is free and open to the public.
