An Emporia man who allegedly stole a truck in Emporia last month and led a short chase out of town had his preliminary hearing continued Wednesday.
33-year-old Blake Cheney was in Lyon County District Court Wednesday afternoon where a judge continued the case through Feb. 4 at 2 pm. Cheney was charged last month with aggravated burglary, theft, flee and elude, reckless driving, criminal carrying a weapon and driving while revoked or suspended.
The charges follow a mid-December incident where a pickup was stolen from the 1500 block of Thompson, leading to a vehicle pursuit and foot chase that ended at a rural farmstead int he 1200 block of Road 160 just south of Emporia.
As Cheney allegedly stole the truck, the owner, Brian Wilhite shot several rounds at him after reportedly seeing a dark figure pointing at him and realizing there was a loaded gun in the cab of the truck. A decision on whether to file formal charges against Wilhite has not been announced.
