2 pm Monday: UPDATE: Dense fog advisories extended, winter weather advisories underway
Dense fog advisories have been extended for some parts of the KVOE listening area as our chances of a wintry mix of precipitation pick up somewhat.
Originally set to end at 9 am, advisories for the entire KVOE listening area were extended until noon — and now will end at 4 pm for Lyon, Coffey, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties. The National Weather Service has extended the advisories for Chase and Greenwood counties which will now end at 9 pm Wednesday.
Thick fog began developing between 5 and 6 pm, and since then visibility has been greatly reduced. Visibility across Emporia was a quarter-mile or less into early Wednesday afternoon, and prior to 5 am it was down to a block. Most area school districts made the decision Tuesday night to delay school Wednesday, but everything is back to normal at this time.
TV-13 meteorologist Doug Meyers expects fog all day, although it could thin out as we get through the afternoon.
In addition, most of the KVOE listening area is now in a winter weather advisory. Advisories for Lyon, Chase, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties go through 6 am Thursday due to an expected wintry mix of light snow, sleet and freezing drizzle.

5 am Wednesday: Dense fog advisories now in place until noon with winter weather advisory to follow
The dense fog advisory in place since Tuesday evening was certainly warranted.
Thick fog began developing between 5 and 6 pm, and since then visibility has been greatly reduced. Visibility across Emporia has been two blocks at best, and in most cases it has been a block or less.
Visibility issues have prompted most area school districts to delay school Wednesday:
*USD 253 Emporia Public Schools all start at 9 am Wednesday. Buses for K-5 schools will run 1 hour late, breakfast in K-5 schools will be served an hour later than normal. Emporia High, Emporia Middle School will follow standard late start procedures. Maynard Early Childhood Center will maintain normal schedule. No PLC for Emporia High or Emporia Middle School teachers before Wednesday classes.
*USD 251 North Lyon County on 1-hour delay Wednesday.
*USD 252 Southern Lyon County on 1-hour delay Wednesday.
*USD 243 Lebo-Waverly on 2-hour delay Wednesday.
*USD 244 Burlington on 1-hour delay Wednesday.
*USD 284 Chase County on 1-hour delay Wednesday.
*USD 386 Madison-Virgil on 2-hour delay Wednesday.
*USD 390 Hamilton on 2-hour delay Wednesday.
*USD 417 Morris County on 1-hour delay Wednesday.
TV-13 meteorologist Doug Meyers says the fog is the result of our recent snowfall.
Dense fog advisories remain in place areawide and now end at noon after originally being set to expire at 9 am. If you encounter fog, use your low-beam headlights, slow down and give extra space between you and other drivers.
In addition, most of the KVOE listening area is now in a winter weather advisory as soon as the dense fog advisories are supposed to end. Advisories for Lyon, Chase, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties go from noon Wednesday through 6 am Thursday due to an expected wintry mix of light snow, sleet and freezing drizzle.
Up to an inch of snow and less than a tenth of an inch of ice are expected, but that could well snarl traffic into Thursday morning.
