Thick fog has enveloped the KVOE listening area sooner than expected, so dense fog advisories have been expanded and reset to start earlier.
Between 6 pm and 6:30 pm, the National Weather Service started dense fog advisories for Lyon and all surrounding counties except for Greenwood. Initially, fewer counties were involved — Lyon, Coffey, Morris and Osage — and the advisories weren’t supposed to start until midnight.
Visibility will be a quarter-mile or less through mid-morning Wednesday.
Besides the overall fog and related travel risk, drivers could have to contend with freezing fog. Low temperatures are supposed to drop to 26 degrees in Emporia and may be slightly cooler in outlying areas overnight.

4 pm Tuesday: Dense fog advisory issued
With foggy conditions expected to return Tuesday night and last into Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service has issued a dense fog advisory for parts of the KVOE listening area.
A dense fog advisory has been issued for Lyon, Morris, Osage and Coffey Counties from 3:30 Tuesday afternoon until 9 am Wednesday morning.
TV-13 meteorologist Jeremy Goodwin says fog Tuesday and Wednesday could resemble the fog from Monday night and Tuesday morning: patchy, occasionally dense and possibly freezing to elevated surfaces.
After the prospect of fog Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, our active weather pattern is likely to continue. There is a possibility of widespread freezing drizzle or freezing rain Wednesday night, with up to a tenth of an inch of icing possible. Accumulating snowfall is possible Friday night and Saturday, but windy and sharply colder conditions are all but guaranteed for Friday night through the upcoming weekend.
