An Emporia veteran serving prison time for drug possession recently had her sentence shortened by Governor Jeff Colyer.
Regina Carter was convicted of first-offense drug possession in 2016 and was originally sentenced to 98 months, or over eight years in prison.
Gov. Jeff Colyer commuted Carter’s sentence, shortening it to 43 months. Colyer says Carter is a combat veteran suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and also finishing a college degree. He also says Carter has already served almost three years of her sentence, which often has shorter prison times, and the legal penalty has been reduced since her sentencing.
Carter, 40, has to complete three years of post-release supervision, drug treatment, education and drug testing. Violation of any of these conditions will send Carter back to prison, but if she meets all conditions she could be released from prison as soon as May.
