Two people arrested after related chases a week ago have now been formally charged.
Chelsea Brooks, 29, of Topeka, has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer as well as flee and elude, methamphetamine and marijuana possession, paraphernalia possession and driving while suspended or revoked.
Jon Buchanan, 37, of Emporia, faces six counts of violating the state’s Offender Registration Act after his 2007 conviction on drug distribution charges required him to register as an offender for 15 years, but he hadn’t done so since this past May.
Brooks and Buchanan both allegedly entered a business in the 600 block of Commercial on Dec. 18. As investigators approached the business, both fled — Buchanan on foot and Brooks by car. Buchanan was arrested in the 200 block of West Seventh, while Brooks was arrested in western Osage County.
Both are set for first appearances Thursday in Lyon County District Court.
Brooks and Buchanan have been labeled as persons of interest in the Dec. 16 shooting in the 800 block of Sylvan, where a 39-year-old man was shot at least once. They are not currently facing charges in that case.
A third person arrested as part of the shooting investigation, Robert Jones, was arrested for allegedly violating a protection order and failing to appear on a traffic case.
