9:30 am Sunday: Lyon, Coffey county deputies seeking white delivery-style box truck after I-35 hit-and-run
Deputies in Lyon and Coffey counties are looking for the truck that allegedly hit an Olathe man and then left the scene of what turned out to be an injury crash early this Sunday morning.
Coffey County authorities were first alerted to the crash on Interstate 35 around 6:30 am, although the wreck was later pinpointed on the Lyon County side of the line at mile marker 142, nine miles east of Emporia’s eastern city limits and just east of the Kansas Highway 130 Hartford-Neosho Rapids exit. Lyon County authorities were then notified about 20 minutes after the initial call.
Lyon County Deputy Sgt. Doug Stump says 66-year-old Larry Childers of Olathe had pulled off the highway so his wife could change a diaper. He was out of the car when a truck then hit both Childers and the car.
There is no description available on the truck’s driver at this time.
Childers, meanwhile, suffered apparently non-life-threatening injuries and was able to get back to the car after both were hit. He was taken to Coffey County Hospital in Burlington for treatment. The hospital does not release patient conditions to the media.
