Emporia Police have arrested three people as their investigation continues into a weekend shooting, although they are not specifying any connection between two of the suspects and the shooting at this time.
Capt. Dave DeVries says officers have been gathering information after a shooting incident reported in the 800 block of Sylvan from Sunday night. A 39-year-old man was shot and later taken to Newman Regional Health for treatment.
On Tuesday, officers and investigators did a surveillance operation at 115 Walnut with the help of Lyon County deputies. After a search warrant at the house and a simultaneous car stop in the 1500 block of West south, 29-year-old Robert Jones was arrested on warrants unrelated to the shooting.
Shortly after 4 pm, two people of interest in the shooting incident were spotted at a business in the 600 block of Commercial. They fled out two separate doors as detectives went to the business, so two different police pursuits began.
One suspect, 37-year-old Jon A. “Jon Jon” Buchanan fled on foot but was captured in the 200 block of West Seventh.
The other, 29-year-old Chelsea Brooks of Topeka, drove away through Emporia State University property before driving north out of town on Kansas Highway 99 — driving directly at a law enforcement vehicle at least once during the pursuit. The chase went north on K-99 and Road L to US Highway 56 before turning east. Eventually, authorities used stop sticks to get the vehicle stopped in western Osage County.
Brooks was arrested on suspicion of felony flee and elude and at least one count of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. Buchanan was arrested on existing warrants along with suspicion of flee and elude, resisting arrest and methamphetamine possession. Authorities believe he may have swallowed meth before his arrest, so he was taken to Newman Regional Health for a wellness check before he was booked into the Lyon County Jail.
Formal charges are pending against all three individuals.
The investigation continues into the Sunday shooting. Emporia Police have not released the victim’s name or given a condition update.
