Emporia firefighters say a planned trash burn led to a larger, unplanned fire that caused significant damage to a small apartment building.
Crews were called out shortly before 11 am for a reported structure fire in the 2300 block of Hillcrest. Once on scene, crews noticed smoke coming from both the side and attic of an apartment located at 2311 Hillcrest.
Battalion Chief Ryan Schmidt says crews had the fire under control within just a few minutes after arriving on scene.
Firefighters were able to contain the flames before they spread to any neighboring homes.
According to Schmidt, the fire developed as one resident was burning “yard waste” which unintentionally caught a bush on fire and spread to the home. The damage to the home is being categorized as moderate to major. No injuries were reported. However, two individuals will be displaced for the time being.
Red Cross has been contacted to assist those individuals.
