One person has been arrested after the discovery of a reported stolen vehicle, a chase from Emporia into Lyon County and a report of shots fired during the incident.
Police Capt. Dave DeVries says officers were dispatched to the area of 12th and Thompson around 8:20 pm Saturday after a reportedly stolen vehicle from 1517 Thompson was found near the intersection. There was also a report the vehicle’s owner had shot at it while it was being stolen.
An officer later found the vehicle near Soden’s Grove and a short chase developed. The vehicle then stopped near 1270 Road 160 and the driver fled on foot. Eventually, the suspect, identified as 33-year-old Blake Cheney of Emporia, was arrested after he was found hiding in a building on the property.
Cheney was arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary, felony theft, felony flee and elude, felon in possession of a firearm and driving while suspended. Cheney has a lengthy criminal history, with convictions of burglary, theft, criminal damage, flee and elude and criminal in possession of a firearm dating back to 2004 in Lyon and Greenwood counties.
Formal charges are currently pending.
