The town of Overbrook is using, well, a unique approach to solving a longstanding problem with geese.
The birds have considered a nuisance for years at Overbrook City Lake and Overbrook Kid’s Fishing Pond. After a City Council meeting last week, the board has finalized plans for a quartet of hunts early next year.
During the hunts, all other activities at Overbrook City Lake will be rescheduled or disallowed. All hunters must have a valid Kansas Hunting License, Kansas HIP Permit, State Waterfowl Permit, and Federal Waterfowl Permit.
Alcohol will be forbidden. At least two police officers will be on hand for security measures.
Dates will be Jan. 5, Jan. 19, Feb. 2 and Feb. 16. Eight hunters will be allowed for each of the hunts. A lottery will determine hunters. Residents need to email hunt coordinator Dan Shively at shively.dan@gmail.com to be involved in the lottery.
Geese have been considered an issue in Overbrook in part because they contribute to toxic blue-green algae at the two ponds.
The hunts will be limited to Overbrook residents only. Residents can call the Overbrook City Clerk’s Office at 785-665-7328 with questions, including requests for more information. City Clerk Jim Koger will join Friday’s Newsmaker segment with more information about the town’s overall goose control plan.
