Two occupants of a semi were hurt and later taken to Emporia for treatment after a crash in northeast Lyon County on Tuesday night.
The crash happened on US Highway 56 about a half-mile east of Miller Elevator, or between Kansas Highway 78 and Road Y, shortly after 6:30 pm. Deputy Justin Carr says the driver, 34-year-old Girma Tebeje of Nevada, was eastbound when the steering wheel locked up around 6:30 pm. Tebeje and his passenger, 45-year-old Michael Sadler of West Virginia, tried unsuccessfully to get the steering wheel working again. The semi went into a ditch and over a culvert before going through a barbed wire fence.
Both Tebeje and Sadler were out of the semi and walking around when rescue workers and deputies arrived. However, both were taken to Newman Regional Health with what are being called non-life-threatening injuries.
