Officials with Lyon County and the North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging expect a seamless transition in senior services next month.
Back in October, the county and Area Agency reached an agreement where the county would hand off most of its senior services to the Area Agency, including health insurance counseling, commodity box distribution and information.
Area Agency Director Julie Govert-Walter joined KVOE’s 8:05 am newscast Tuesday with an update. She says the agency will offer “enhanced services” with those efforts and will increase its presence at Lyon County’s senior centers. The agency will still run programs like Friendship Meals. However, one portion of county services — LCAT, or Lyon County Area Transportation — will remain under county oversight.
As part of this agreement, work continues at the Friendship Center, 221 West Logan, where senior services will be headquartered come Jan. 2. Govert-Walter says physical renovations are underway.
Also, the Area Agency is awaiting word on its grant application for the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. If approved, perhaps as soon as spring 2019, federal funds would support efforts to have a base of senior volunteers for different events or projects in much the same way as Lyon County has had in years past as part of the county program.
