Trial for a rape suspect was supposed to start Monday in Lyon County District Court. Now it’s on hold until springtime.
Jury selection was supposed to lead to opening arguments in the case against 47-year-old Edgar Hilberto Gonzalez. Instead, Gonzalez’s defense team offered a motion to continue the case and delay the trial so a cell phone could be examined. The motion was granted.
This pushes trial to April 29, with a final pretrial hearing set for April 24. A hearing has been added Feb. 15 to hear motions in the case.
Gonzalez is charged with single counts of rape and aggravated criminal sodomy after an alleged incident from early this year. He’s accused of sexually assaulting a then-18-year-old person in early January. The affidavit in this case remains sealed.
