Fort Hays State used a 21-12 run in the final 5 plus minutes to out score the Emporia State men 86-78 Saturday.
The game featured 7 ties and 12 lead changes. The biggest lead for Emporia State was by 3 in the first half. Their biggest deficit was by 8. Emporia State grabbed a 66-65 lead with 5:58 to play. Fort Hays went on a 9-1 run to take a 7 point led. Justin Washington cut the deficit to 4 with 34 seconds to play on his only 3 point shot of the game but the Hornets could never retake the lead. Fort Hays was 6-6 in the final 42 seconds from the free throw line to seal the win. Emporia State Coach Craig Doty said they did not play well defensively.
Emporia State was led by Julis Jackson with 21 points. Malik Hluchoweckjy added 20 points, Justin Washington finished with 14 points and Kooper Glick scored 13 points. The Emporia State men are now 5-3 for the season and 1-1 in the MIAA. The Hornets return to action next Saturday with a game at Rockhurst.
