The Newman Regional Health Foundation has established a scholarship fund to honor the memory of an Emporia woman killed earlier this year.
Mackenzie Payne was stabbed to death in late June. The 2013 Emporia High grad was preparing to attend medical school at the University of Kansas.
On KVOE’s Morning Show recently, Payne’s father, Brian, said Mackenzie Payne showed an interest in medicine at an early age.
Foundation Director Mike Perigo says the fund will provide a $1,500 scholarship.
The fund started with gifts from Newman Medical Partners staff. Mackenzie Payne at one point was a receptionist in that part of the hospital.
Brian Payne says his daughter had high praise for her co-workers before she was killed.
Payne credited the outpouring of support from family, friends, co-workers and church members for helping the family through what he admits has been a rough few months.
