Several national or international companies with a local presence have signed on to a project using wind to power their local operations.
Westar Energy says 14 businesses or organizations have enrolled in its Renewables Direct program to receive part or all of their electricity from the Soldier Creek Wind Energy Center in Nemaha County once that facility is built in two years. On that list locally are Bunge North America, Cargill and Cummings.
Westar announced the project in July with the goal of offering larger customers a chance to tap wind energy for their power needs. Companies involved in the Renewables Direct program can claim part of the energy produced by the wind farm as their own. They can also retain all the renewable attributes and also lock in part of their electricity prices for up to two decades if they so choose.
