Travel conditions have improved noticeably from this time Monday morning, when rain from Sunday evening had frozen and light snow fell on top of the glaze.
In Emporia, major streets are largely dry after crews put down melting materials for much of the morning and early afternoon. Lyon County roads are also in relatively good shape after crews began treating or clearing roads since early Monday morning, according to County Engineer Chip Woods. Bridges, overpasses and intersections may still be slick in spots.
Lyon County had several noninjury crashes Monday, while the weather played a role in two injury accidents on the Kansas Turnpike in Chase County. Shortly after 1 am, 20-year-old Mikaela Pike of Liberty, Mo., hit a slick spot and crashed into the center barrier wall near mile marker 111. She was hospitalized afterward. Around 7 am, another one-vehicle crash developed at mile marker 106. One person was hospitalized after that wreck. Further details are pending on that crash.
