One person has been arrested after an apparent hit-and-run incident at highway speeds near Emporia on Saturday.
Lyon County Deputy Zach Shafer says authorities were first dispatched to Interstate 35 mile marker 140 southbound, about seven miles east of Emporia’s eastern city limits, around 8:30 am. One driver reported that a second car had hit his car and then continued on the highway at a high rate of speed.
Soon after, deputies found a similar vehicle on the Interstate and stopped it just south of the Kansas Turnpike Emporia tollgate.
The driver was arrested, and Shafer says deputies were still waiting for a positive identification on the suspect as of mid-afternoon Saturday.
Formal charges are pending. Authorities arrested the second driver on suspicion of aggravated assault, no driver’s license, no insurance, reckless driving, speeding and transporting an open container of alcohol.
