Shortly after Emporia wrapped up its Veteran’s Day celebration, a disc golf tournament for the United Way organization began.
Vicki Brooks, Emporia’s Campaign Chair for the United Way of the Flint Hills organized this event for the benefit of the group. She chose to do a disc golf tournament as a fundraiser because of its integration into the local community, offering credit to a coworker of hers.
As of last Friday, Brooks says the total campaign funds raised is currently at $140,000. The goal for United Way this year is $550,000, and the goal for Newman Regional Health is $15,500. According to Brooks, Newman only has $3,500 to go.
The tournament had participants of all ages. Young Eljin Crouch expresses his reason for braving the cold for the tournament.
Next Thursday, Newman Regional Health will host a bake sale auction from 7:30am to 10:00am, and Brooks encourages the community to come and support the cause.
