A former Lyon County and Coffey County law enforcement official has died.
Joseph Atchison, 38, passed away Sunday at his home, according to the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission. The Tonganoxie Police Department is investigating and has not released any information about his death. A spokesman says he cannot comment on the case at this time, calling the investigation “active.”
Atchison served as a sheriff’s deputy for the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office from 2001 to 2011 and prior to that worked with the Lebo Police Department. Most recently, he was an enforcement agent with the Racing and Gaming Commission and was stationed at the Hollywood Casino in Kansas City, Kan. The Racing and Gaming Commission has issued a statement saying it “confirms the untimely passing” of Atchison. The statement asks people to respect the privacy of the Atchison family.
Back in August, Atchison was briefly listed as missing but was found safe in Coffey County.
