With the number of accidents at bus stops climbing across the country, the Emporia School District is reminding residents of proper bus safety.
Within just the past week, six different injury or fatality accidents have occurred across the nation, the most recent occurring Thursday in Tampa, Fla. A car disobeyed traffic signals from a school bus which resulted in the injuries of five school children and two adults.
USD 253 Transportation Director Becky Douglas says drivers ignoring signs to stop is a common occurrence even in Emporia, specifically in the busier traffic areas.
Douglas explains the proper protocol for disembarking buses at their designated stops.
Drivers perform daily inspections before taking buses out to ensure everything is operating efficiently. Refusal to stop once a bus has displayed its stop sign may result in fines upwards of $350.
For more information on proper protocol, contact the USD 253 Transportation Office by calling 620-341-2218.
