There were a lot of “oohs,” “ahhs” and “wows” during Saturday’s Quilts of Gratitude presentation.
Quilts of Gratitude has certainly grown over time, and the event once again had standing-room-only attendance at the American Legion Post No. 5.
Among the veterans receiving quilts were the husband-wife duo of Bill and Sarah McKernan. Bill McKernan started in the Air Force in 1987, working up from the enlisted ranks to lieutenant colonel during a 30-year career that also included time in the Army. He says he’s grateful to be an Emporia native as the city continually reinvents the annual All Veterans Tribute.
Sarah McKernan enlisted in the Army Reserves in 1988.
Fifty quilts were handed to veterans and family members.
Veterans Tribute activities continue Sunday with Freedom Fest, which begins at 8 am at Sodens Grove, and the annual Student Essay and Poster Contest, beginning at 2 pm at Emporia Middle School.
