Public meetings continue through Thursday as the city of Emporia and Lyon County continue work to adjust the comprehensive plan.
Lyon County Zoning and Planning Administrator Sam Seeley says public involvement now can help to encourage development later.
Seeley says the current zoning regulations, both in Emporia and countywide, are somewhat inflexible. The local zoning effort is moving towards a form-based approach, which uses the physical form of buildings as a guiding principle in what kinds of development can go into different parts of town.
Work this week will help to flesh out the so-called Regulating Plan for Emporia and Lyon County. It will also set up standards for buildings, streets and landscapes as the zoning work continues through next year.
Meetings continue at the Emporia Arts Center until 6 pm Wednesday and from 8 am to 6 pm Thursday.
