The Flint Hills Trail Advisory Council will have its inaugural meeting Thursday.
The council was enacted by the Legislature earlier this year when the Flint Hills Trail State Park was created. The board includes 14 members, including two lawmakers, six county commissioners or designees and a resident from each of the six counties along the trail, including Lyon, Morris and Osage in the KVOE listening area.
The trail encompasses nearly 120 miles and passes either through or very near to Allen, Admire, Bushong, Council Grove and Osage City. The trail was first a discontinued line from the Missouri Pacific Railroad before the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy bought it in 1995. It is now popular for walking tours, cycling events, geocaching and other activities.
Thursday’s agenda includes a discussion about the board’s purpose and a review of Flint Hills Trail history and development. The meeting will be from 6-9 pm at the Franklin County Commission Annex in Ottawa.
