Beacon for Hope brought residents together Saturday to share in a celebration of life.
The inaugural Unmasking Suicide Masquerade Ball was held at the Bowyer Building. Those in attendance dawned colorful masks and gowns and danced the night away to raise funds for suicide prevention.
When asked why they decided to hold a masquerade, Beacon for Hope Director Melissa Kurtenbach explains
Kurtenbach adds while the masks are a stylish accessory, they also carry a powerful symbolism.
The evening featured dancing, food, a silent auction, and an unmasking ceremony. Kurtenbach says all proceeds from the event will be used to provide suicide prevention training for residents in Emporia and surrounding areas to create a “suicide savior community.”
Plans are already in motion for next year’s Masquerade which will be held Nov. 2, 2019. Photos are available with this story at KVOE.com.
