Sixth graders at Emporia Middle School made strides to make a difference in the community.
The sixth annual Walk-a-Thon took place Friday at EMS and helped support multiple local organizations and causes in the Emporia Community. Lead organizer and EMS Language Arts teacher Christy Dragonas says the event instills students with a passion for helping those around them.
Collectively students raised over 8,000 dollars which will be split up between five local Match Day beneficiaries. Along with those groups, the Samples family, whose son Hunter is undergoing treatment for brain tumors, and EMS teacher Lori Grimmet, who is currently battling breast cancer, each received $2,000.
Dragonas explains how the students decide where the funds go.
This year the Walk-a-Thon raised a total of $8,292. Over the past six years, the event has collectively raised $63,300.
The team results were as follows
Lime Team: $3,840.23
Aqua Team: $2,622.83
Silver Team: $1,457.55
