Recently, Flint Hills winters have been fairly mild, with not a lot of wintry precipitation. And that trend may continue this winter.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has released its Winter Weather Outlook. National Weather Service meteorologist Thomas Vaughn says there’s at least a decent chance we could have another mild winter.
Less certain, Vaughn says, are precipitation chances.
Meteorologists are watching the expected formation of El Nino, where surface water temperatures in the Central Pacific Ocean are warmer than normal, over the next few weeks. This does not appear to be a strong El Nino, but typically that weather phenomenon leads to wetter-than-average precipitation in the Deep South and drought in the North.
The Climate Prediction Center will update this outlook Nov. 15 and will also update monthly through the winter.
