Minor injuries were the result of a semi crash near the junction of two major highways in northeast Lyon County on Tuesday.
The Kansas Highway Patrol says 31-year-old Kyle Wilkinson of Clarksdale, Mo., was hurt in the crash. Wilkinson was westbound on US Highway 56 when his semi went off the highway to the right and overturned in a ditch. The wreck happened just north of the Kansas Turnpike’s Admire-Council Grove tollgate just after 9:30 am.
Wilkinson was treated at the scene and declined a trip to a hospital. He was wearing his seatbelt at the time.
Numerous agencies responded to the crash, including the Highway Patrol, Lyon County deputies, the Kansas Department of Transportation, Lyon County Highway Department and rescue teams from Emporia, Allen-Admire and Miller. It took around four hours before traffic returned to normal.
2:30 pm Tuesday: US-56 traffic back to normal after semi rollover
It took close to four hours, but traffic on US Highway 56 returned to normal Tuesday afternoon after a crash just north of the Kansas Turnpike’s Admire-Council Grove exit.
Crash details are currently pending, but a semi rolled on US 56, blocking traffic from before 10 am to around 1:30 pm. The driver, who suffered minor injuries, received initial care on site and declined a trip to a hospital afterward.
Numerous agencies responded, including Lyon County deputies, the Kansas Highway Patrol, Kansas Department of Transportation and Lyon County Highway Department. The minor injuries were not initially reported, and it took about 20 minutes for rescue teams from Emporia, Allen-Admire and Miller to be paged out.

Traffic is getting back to normal speed after an injury crash near the junction of two major highways northeast of Emporia.
Initially, Lyon County deputies, Kansas Highway Patrol, Kansas Department of Transportation and Lyon County Highway Department were all dispatched to the site of a semi rollover shortly after the incident was reported around 10 am at US Highway 56 just north of the Kansas Turnpike’s Admire-Council Grove exit. Once minor injuries were reported, rescue crews from Emporia, Allen-Admire and Miller also responded.
Crash details are pending, but the early indications are the semi was laid on its side as part of the wreck. The driver refused to go to a hospital afterward.
Rescue crews and most law enforcement and highway agencies have left. Deputies are currently on site directing traffic past the crash site.
