Detours are still in effect for Lyon County drivers, but travel just got a lot more convenient for a lot of area residents.
K-99 south of Emporia opened around 5 am. It had been closed since Wednesday due to flooding.
The list of road closures is shrinking, but repair bills may be swelling for Lyon County as a result of flooding that may continue into the weekend.
County Engineer Chip Woods is estimating at least $100,000 worth of damage. He’s also urging drivers to be patient, because this won’t be a quick fix — even if the weather is relatively calm into spring 2019. The county has not determined whether it will reach out to the federal government for reimbursement assistance, but it will likely have to republish the Highway Department budget later this year as a result of the flooding. The Road & Bridge Department will not be sending crews out over the weekend to open roads. The roads will need to be evaluated prior to reopening. Restoration to the county roads will begin again on Monday. Motorists are reminded to always exercise caution on all roadways and never go around barricades.
