In four weeks Kansans will head to the polls to decide a number of contested races, perhaps none more competitive than the race for governor.
Candidates continue to push their platforms to the masses. Democrat Laura Kelly was in Emporia for a meet and greet Saturday at Twin Rivers Winery and the Emporia State University football game vs. Fort Hays State. She explains a growing sense across the state of a need for a reversal of course on some of the decisions championed by Sam Brownback the previous eight years.
Asked how she plans to govern as a Democrat, in a heavily red state, Kelly says her plans come down to putting people who are qualified into her cabinet, regardless of party affiliations.
Kelly continues to assert herself as the candidate who can defeat Kris Kobach, who many pundits see as the favorite to win the election in November. The race also includes Independent candidate Greg Orman. Kelly declined to say whether that helps or hinder her chances.
Voter registration ends Oct. 16. Advance voting begins Oct. 22 and Oct. 30 is the last day to apply for a mail ballot. The general election is Nov. 6. The Lyon County Clerk’s Office is also hosting a special voting day on Saturday, Oct. 20 which will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Flinthills Mall.
