Less than 10 days remain before KVOE’s annual Drive for Food to benefit the Salvation Army food pantry.
Capt. Deb Thompson, KVOE’s Newsmaker 2 guest Tuesday, says the shelves are bare and the charitable agency has had to adjust what it gives to families as a result.
Thompson encourages donations of all non-perishable food, especially so-called helper meals. She is also asking for personal hygiene items as part of the effort.
The food drive is Oct. 11. KVOE is asking residents to call the station at 342-1400 or email kvoe@kvoe.com with addresses now and then leave food at either mailboxes or front porches on the 11th. KVOE staff, Boy Scout Troop 157 members and Thomas Transfer employees will then stop by and pick up those donations. Businesses or charitable agencies wanting to be drop-off points can also call or email the station to get on the list.

Separately, Thompson encouraged people to become bell ringers for the Salvation Army’s annual kettle campaign with the registration window now open.
Thompson says bell-ringers can expect to handle two-hour shifts anytime between 8 am 7 pm Mondays through Saturdays. She says there is a lot of traffic at the red kettles Thursdays through Saturdays, but any help will be welcome once the drive officially kicks off on Black Friday. Proceeds help offset rent or utility bills, fill the food pantry and provide clothing vouchers for those in need.
To sign up, call the Salvation Army at 342-3093 or go online to www.registertoring.com.
