As the City of Emporia prepares to resurface Merchant Street between 12th Ave. and Interstate 35 next month, Emporia State University is planning some adjustments to ease traffic flow to and from campus.
ESU is planning detours of traffic flow and access to a popular parking lot on the west side of campus from 12th to 15th Ave. ESU Assistant Director of Media Relations Gwen Larson.
With the Merchant Street entrance to the parking lot experiencing future closures, ESU is planning to rework the traffic flow so that the parking lot can be accessed from campus through Kellogg Circle, passing Plumb Hall and driving west into the meter/gold lot and proceeding into the orange and metered lot. To exit the parking lot, patrons will have to use the only exit at the north end of the lot and then turn right onto 15th Avenue. Larson says for students living west of the ESU campus who walk to school there will be additional adjustments.
For events in the Memorial Union, the closest parking is in metered spaces on Market Street and in the lot directly east of the Memorial Union. Conference attendees can park in designated areas in a lot northeast of the Union.
There is no definite date for when the repaving will begin, but it will begin sometime in October. ESU anticipates heavier traffic along 15th as it cuts through campus. Those who travel to ESU via I-35, are encouraged to use the Burlingame Road exit instead of the Merchant Street exit when construction begins.
