Westar Energy customers will see lower energy bills soon.
The Kansas Corporation Commission on Thursday approved a settlement agreement cutting electric rates by $66 million. That translates to a reduction of about $3.80 per month for residential customers.
The KCC’s action includes almost $75 million worth of credits from two sources, the federal Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and up-front bill credits originating with Westar’s merger with Kansas City Power & Light as those companies become known as Evergy in the coming months.
The order also sets up a three-part rate plan for distributed generation or DG customers who installed their own generators after Oct. 28, 2015.
Westar had originally approached the KCC with a planned rate increase of almost $53 million in February, but agreed to the rate reduction in July after discussions with KCC staff, the Citizens Utility Ratepayer Board and other stakeholders.
